Endowments

Providing for Brighter Futures

The Children’s Aid Foundation education endowment funds are individually named and can honour a family, a family member or the donor. The endowment agreement between the Foundation and the donor will specifically outline the intent of the donor and the expected role of the Foundation. Endowed gifts can be directed to any one or all of our three pillars, prevention, enrichment and education.

Education Endowments

In 1995, the Children’s Aid Foundation began working on the development of programs to address the challenges facing children who have experienced trauma of abuse and/or neglect and the negative impact this has on their ability to learn and complete their education. Research shows that education is the most important tool in breaking the cycle of abuse, poverty and neglect. Many of our endowed funds are directed towards education.

Abuse and trauma experienced early in a child’s life have a serious impact on their education and they often require additional educational support. A study of children in the care of the Children’s Aid Societies revealed that these children were:

  • On average one to two grade levels behind their peers in school
  • Over-represented in special education, especially in relation to behavioural issues
  • Suspended much more frequently than the general school population
  • Unlikely to continue on to post-secondary education

If a child stays in school and graduates from high school, they are less likely to continue the cycle of disadvantage. If a child or youth continues on to pursue a post-secondary education, studies show they have “beaten the odds” through hard work and dedication.

Many children and youth who received support from the Foundation in their early years through tutoring and award programs, have caught up with their peers, and graduated from high school. We have seen an increasing number of youth continue on to post-secondary education. In 2008-2009, the Foundation awarded over 225 scholarships and bursaries.

The establishment of an education endowment fund ensures the sustainability of our education programs for the children and youth who need and want to make a better life for themselves through higher education.

Your gift will make a difference.

As an example, the income from an endowed gift of $100,000 will:

  • Provide at least one (1) $5,000 scholarship or three (3) $1,500 Bursaries annually
  • Increase the number of children and youth who will be able to meet the academic expectations for their age and grade level
  • Increase the number of youth who will successfully complete their high school education through tutoring supports
  • Increase the number of youth pursuing a post-secondary education that will support their independence
  • Decrease the burden of a discouraging debt for our youth
  • Increase the financial resources available to the Foundation so that more young people served by the Children’s Aid Societies can receive scholarships and bursaries to financially assist their post-secondary education

Before you make a donation, we strongly encourage you to seek independent, qualified advice from your accountant, estate planner, lawyer etc., on the appropriateness of doing so.
