Child welfare and the current economy
The current economic climate is the prevailing topic of 2009. Everyone is feeling the impact of the economic down turn in one way or another which is reflected in the increasing levels of unemployment and rising welfare rates.
Disadvantaged children and youth and their families are the most vulnerable at this time. The downturn in the economy leads to unemployment, social assistance and poverty which increases child abuse, neglect and instability.
“Despite the challenges of the current economic climate, we must continue to remain dedicated to helping children and youth in need,” says Ann Barnard Ball, Executive Director of the Children’s Aid Foundation. “Despite the increasing pressures on families in Canada during the economic crisis, our children still need to have support and people helping them live safe and healthy lives.”
Shocking statistics from before the economic downturn showed that one in six children in Ontario lives in poverty and that over 77,000 allegations of abuse and neglect were investigated in 2007/2008. Unfortunately, the economic crisis will have a negative effect on these numbers.
Not all news concerning the economic situation is bad though. Child welfare organizations across the country, including the Children’s Aid Foundation, are working harder than ever to increase the funding brought in to support those in need. The Children’s Aid Foundation is looking at all aspects of their short and long-term planning to ensure that every donor dollar is being stretched and utilized to the best of its ability and will benefit as many children and youth as possible.
On behalf of the children and youth already being supported and those who need support, the Children’s Aid Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt thank you. Together we will not only get through this economic uncertainty but we will also help alleviate the burden for thousands of children.

Ways to help without breaking your bank:
• Make a donation in the name of your friend or family member celebrating a momentous occasion, like a birthday.
• For your next get-together, ask that attendees bring a donation for the Foundation instead of a gift for the host.
• Take your morning beverage in a travel mug and put the money you would have spent on buying a drink into a donation piggy bank.
• Leave a jar on your desk at work asking for donations.
