For many of us, the holidays mark a time spent with our loved ones, sharing gifts, food, and good company. But, for many children and families across our communities, this holiday will be far from bright. By supporting the Children’s Aid Foundation’s Hope for the Holidays this season, you can provide monetary donations, as well as toys and basic necessities, that will directly support underprivileged children and youth involved with the child welfare system.
There are three ways you can help. 1) Donations 2) Fill the Sleigh (Gifts-in-Kind) 3) Holiday Cards
As a returning supporter of the Fill the Sleigh program, Wynne Chung has made her donation an annual holiday tradition. “Everyone deserves to be happy during the holidays,” says Wynne. “Whatever their situation is, we want them to know that there was someone who thought of them.”
After reaching out the Children’s Aid Society to learn more about how she could specifically support youth in care, Wynne discovered the Foundation’s Fill the Sleigh program and decided to take action. Bringing together a group of her family and friends to participate, Wynne says they not only felt grateful to be able to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable kids, but to also spend time together in the process.
“Whatever their situation is, we want them to know that there was someone who thought of them.”
“Year after year, we bought gifts for our little ones, toys that probably had no meaning to them after opening,” Wynne explains. “We thought to ourselves: is this really what the holidays are about? We decided that instead of spending the money to buy gifts for each other, we would use that money to shop for gifts for Fill the Sleigh. Although our kids are still very young, they learned that they could make another child extremely happy during the holidays. Our children went shopping with us, picked out gifts, helped us sort, and did the drop offs with us; they knew they were making a difference.”
