In Canada, our private dental care system can be a barrier to accessing oral health care for those who lack insurance coverage and cannot afford to see a dentist or dental hygienist. This is especially true for vulnerable populations, including children youth in and from child welfare. Not having access to dental services can lead to serious issues like dental pain, tooth decay, and a variety of oral diseases that affect their overall health and well-being, and can lead to even more health issues in the future.
When youth transition out of child welfare, they are left with very few support options as they navigate the challenges of taking care of their own health care needs. Through the support of Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s generous Stand Up for Kids Project donors, we are able to provide kids in and from care with financial support so they can access the health services they need and overcome health-related barriers to successful futures.
A former youth in care who, for three years, struggled with dental pain as a result of impacted wisdom teeth. Surgery to remove her wisdom teeth had been recommended many times, but the cost of surgery was too great for her to pay out-of-pocket.
Thanks to generous Canadians like you who’ve joined the Stand Up for Kids Project, DEANNA was able to get the necessary surgery to relieve her of her dental pain. After dental surgery, DEANNA’s pain is gone and she is very grateful to have been able to access financial support for this life-changing procedure.
“[Dental surgery] took away so much of my pain. I feel so good now, thanks to you.”
“I didn’t have the money I needed to get my wisdom teeth out, so this program was my only hope. Thank you again for making my life better!” – DEANNA, former youth in care
The Stand Up for Kids Project continues to break the barriers to a brighter future and create new possibilities for children and youth at risk of entering, growing up in, and transitioning out of the child welfare system. Learn more about the Stand Up for Kids Project here.
